Burmese Brown Mountain Tortoise

My Burmese Brown Mountain Tortoise was the model for this metalpoint drawing. Neglect by her original owner caused pyramiding deformities of her shell. Over the several years I have had her, she has grown well and smoothly. Just last year she finally laid her first clutch of eggs; they were nonfertile, since she doesn't have a mate. She is very curious, thoughtful, and doesn't know her own strength. This ancient turtle is the only species that protects its nest from predators- only for a couple of days, long enough for the scent and evidence of fresh-laid eggs in the nest to dissipate and not be such an attractant for predators.
